Recruiting Update: Decommit and New Recruit

Alright so we got some bad news, a little bit more bad news, and then some good news on the recruiting front.

Missed on 3

The first bid of bad news a bit on the older end, but just so everyone knows, Cal missed out on its top three recruiting targets last week, with DE Devon Kennard committing to USC, WR Randall Carroll dropping Cal from its top 3, and ATH Adam Hall committing to Arizona. While I still think Cal still has a pretty good class, it’s disappointing that the Bears were unable to steal one of those guys away.

Davis Decommits from the Bears

The news gets a little bit worse with reports that DE Ryan Davis has decommitted from the Bears, and has made the switch over to Washington. Davis was a big 3-star DE prospect with legit size (6’4, 260 lbs) and made the switching citing reasons on preferring to play in a 4-3 versus Cal’s 3-4 scheme. While the switch doesn’t immediately hurt the Bears, with Cal having locked in starters with Alualu and Jordan, and pretty good depth, it still stings to lose a prospect with so much potential.

New Recruit: Markish Jones

Fortunately, it picks up a bit with some good news. The Bears reportedly landed Markish Jones, a JC WR Transfer. Jones has a bit of an interesting background. Markish was a highly touted 4-star South Carolina WR recruit who decommitted from Clemson at the last minute in 2007, before signing his letter of intent with Florida State. Jones was declared academically ineligible due to low SAT scores, and has played the past season with Compton City College with fellow Cal commit Jerome Meadows.

While Jones has probably flown under the radar a bit, this is a big time get for the Bears who were looking for a big time WR recruit. Jones was ranked the 28th best receiver in 07, receiving offers from a number of SEC schools including LSU and Tennessee.

Jones also reports good size at 6’0, 183 lbs, and runs a 4.4 forty, which would make him one of the fastest wide receivers on the team. Jones will have three years to play two seasons with the Bears. If the commitment holds, the Bears will have essentially gotten a 4-star WR who has had the chance to polish his skills at the JC level.

The Bear Insider has a short writeup here.

Welcome to the Bears Jones. You and Marvin can be the M. Jones brothers.

Bear With Fangs, what happened with fullback JC recruit Sean Quinn? There is an article here about it but I can't read it. I'm hearing he might be a walk-on at USC now? He's not listed as a commit anymore on Scout or Rivals. I know it's just a fullback we are talking about, but I thought Ta'ufo'ou was a solid blocker, runner & receiver, so with him leaving, some competition with Holley for the starting job would of been nice. In any case, I think I'm more curious on what the story is more than anything, LOL.

Hey Nacho,

Yeah, so it turns out Quinn didn't have as much eligibility as previously thought. It's all a bit confusing.

Here's the explanation as per MoragaBear, a staffwriter on the Bear Insider Board:

"The problem is that Quinn enrolled at Austin Community College the year after he graduated and was taking 12 units. He hadn't intended to play football at that time. But when the possibility of playing football arose in the first few weeks of school, he was told he needed to keep his units below 12 to not start his eligibility clock. He withdrew from a class before the 5 week deadline and thought he was fine until this month. The NCAA's saying that he didn't drop his class early enough and that the clock started then. They also suspected he played football his first year but they don't even have a football program.

The problem now is that if he only had 1 year of eligibility coming into Cal, he'd have to come in with 75% of his units completed and he hasn't.

At this point in time, he hasn't appealed. He really needs to because it sounds like he's getting screwed. The problem is that he's missing the spring semester at Cal and if they were going to give a scholarship to a jc fullback, the only way it was really worthwhile to scholarship him upfront instead of him earning it on the field was if he was really prepared to step in and start right away and be an upgrade over Tyndall and Holly. That's real tough coming in during fall camp instead of spring.

There's always the possibility that he could come in as a walk-on in the fall and compete for a scholarship (if there's even one available) if he takes a boatloan of units this semester or gets late clearance by the NCAA, but it doesn't sound like it would work for him financially if he couldn't get one at that point.

I feel real bad for the guy and I really hope it works out for him."

All in all a crappy situation, and the word is that Quinn is trying to walk on at USC, despite only have one year.
